Living Room Renovation Project - Laying the wooden floor
We've started our own little home interior design project in our flat in Edinburgh!
Just to recap: We moved into our new flat in October last year and it's been a brilliant renovation and styling project for us. This is our first home and we couldn't wait to get stuck in with renovations.
NEW HOME, NEW RENOVATION PROJECTS, NEW EXPERIENCES!
We've decided to start our renovation with our LIVING ROOM!

LAYING THE WOODEN FLOOR AND CUTTING THE SKIRTING BOARDS
CHOOSING WHAT TYPE OF WOODEN FLOOR
Perhaps the most tricky part of the wooden floor for our living room has been deciding which boards to go for in the first place!! There is SO much choice out there. There's engineered oak, real wood floors, laminate or 'floating' engineered wood floors!! Real wood of course is absolutely lovely and gives you very much the real deal! But unfortunately it comes with a price tag! Engineered wood floors I've discovered are a great alternative. The planks are made up of different wood and then finished with a selected type of wood such as oak or ash. The range of laminate floors these days are also amazing and can look extremely authentic. They're great if you're looking for a more cost effective and durable floor.
So we decided to go for an engineered oak floor! I also feel this is more environmentally friendly! Less wood to chop down, extra brownie points. They also don't swell and contract as much as real wood which makes it easier to lay down.
We also went for a floor which is maintained by oiling rather than a pre-finish, helping to keep it's authentic appearance and also great for helping to cover over scratches and wear and tear.
WHERE TO TO BUY OUR WOODEN FLOOR
We googled online where there's an abundance of wooden flooring shops which send you out samples in the post including Direct Wood Flooring who we found very handy!
We also visited the local flooring shops in Edinburgh such as the Edinburgh Flooring Company in Morningside and also Direct Flooring in Leith, this was really helpful to see the boards in full and get a better visualisation.
So eventually we chose our particular wooden planks, along with underlay and glue and set two work to lay the boards in our living room (thank you Richard!! Amazing job!)
Here's a photo story of laying our wooden floor:
HEY PRESTO!
So all that was left was to apply the skirting boards! Out comes the circular saw.....
It's been a steep learning curve! But we finally have our wooden floor and I can't wait to now start bringing in the furniture, wallpapering my feature wall and start the interior styling for our living room!
Do keep tuning in to see the living room come to life!
