It's a golden time of year at the moment. I just love Autumn/Winter when the leaves turn rusty orange, yellows and browns. It's a photographer's prime time with the low sun and the colour bursting backdrops. And as I was scuffing my feet through the fallen leaves at the weekend, it occurred to me how strongly the seasons influence our current colour palettes and choices. I've been exhibiting my soft furnishings collection at Handmade Edinburgh recently where by far the most popular cushion choice from my velvet collection was.......Ta da!Interestingly, I named this design 'Summer Thistle' (!!) due to it's fresh greens and bursts of red. However, on reflection I need to perhaps consider renaming as this cushion is the perfect excuse to decorate your pad in rusty autumnal colour palettes, as I have been experimenting with today.Decorating in An Autumnal Colour Palette Having a theme in mind when starting your decoration project gives you a huge boost in helping launch yourself off the designing starter blocks.I can guarantee that it helps you to move away from that blank, dazed stare and puzzling expressions when faced with a gigantic paint colour chart.Already you have a rough idea of colours, thanks to the abundance of natural hues that you may have spotted out while walking the dog or walking to the post box. Colour is everywhere at the moment and we can't help but be influenced by our outdoor palette.Here are a few interior decorating ideas and inspiration that I have come up with, using the Autumn season as my theme and my thistle cushions as decor inspiration.Here we have some rusty tans & copper tones together with sage greens and an uplifting blue to complement.On closer inspection..Warm tones for a relaxed, harmonious living space...and a perfect colour combination to set off against a sleek brass light fitting or copper shade.You can even go as far as to bring the outdoors in with a leafy wallpaper such as this 'Acer' wallpaper from Zoffany.And if this has got your autumnal colour fingers excited, then how about introducing a fourth colour into the equation, such as a terracotta red (accentuated here with the vibrant pattern of my thistle cushion from my velvet Mairi Helena cushion collection).

Or alternatively, opt for a complementing caramel in place of the sage green. I particularly love this sophisticated, warm, cosy palette, highlighted to the right of the picture by Cole & Son plume collections.

And so there we have it. A range of colour palettes based on the Autumn colours for cosy home interiors. Three different colour ways for contemplation. Will you go sage green with rusty copper and tans?

Or drop the green for the light caramel? Or perhaps introduce a warm terracotta orange?

Which ever colour palette you decide for your own home, make sure to you take plenty opportunity to enjoy the outdoors before the last of the leaves fall to the ground!
