Living Room Renovation Project - Adding Our Fireplace, from Start to Finish
We’ve started our own little home interior design project in our flat in Edinburgh!
Just to recap: We moved into our new flat in October last year and it’s been a brilliant renovation and styling project for us. This is our first home and we couldn’t wait to get stuck in with renovations.
NEW HOME, NEW RENOVATION PROJECTS, NEW EXPERIENCES!
We’ve decided to start our renovation with our LIVING ROOM!If you've been keeping up with the blog lately, you will have seen the big reveal of our feature wall paper on our chimney wall which stands boldly at one end of our living room.Along with the help of an eye catching wallpaper design, we also wanted to add a focal point to our room and what better way than to bring back a real fire place into the heart of the living room.Pictured below is an image of the chimney wall which stretches through the middle of our living room:We wanted to bring back the fireplace and therefore knock through into the chimney breast and discover the flues underneath the wooden panels:So we did!!It was great to reveal the old flue and fireplace:
It was difficult deciding what type of fireplace surround and stove design to go for. We wanted to keep to a contemporary style and with the help of some pinning of ideas on Pinterest, we eventually decided upon a stove with a large glass front and simple, plain design in keeping with a modern fireplace surround:
The fire surround we had chosen was a wooden pine with lovely grains. We decided to paint in a Ronseal white wash in order to soften the colour of the wooden surround but keep the lovely wooden grain texture.
And hey presto, here's the finished article! We're so glad we recovered the fireplace and now have a living room with a focal point offset against the feature wallpaper wall:
Now I must get on and decorate that bare looking mantel piece.....!
Do let me know your thoughts on how you like to decorate your own living room mantelpiece!!
