Interior details that will help style your home with a wow!

I remember someone saying to me when I was planning our wedding table decorations not to get too hung up on details as often they go unnoticed anyway......I looked back at them in disbelief!! I couldn't have disagreed more. For me, it's all about the details. Whether it's an arrangement of colourful cushions plumped on the sofa or a collection of personal photographs stylishly mounted on a gallery wall, or the placement of freshly cut flowers in a vase next to your bed, it's the attention to little details that make a house a home.

Here are thoughts on several easy style ideas to consider to help instantly add a splash of colourful detail and personal identity into your own homeDisplaying wall art Whether it's pictures, textiles, mirrors or even a mural, creating an eye catching display on the wall has to be one of the most effective ways of creating a focus point in an interior. Those blank walls are a perfect backdrop in which to add your personality to your home.Hanging YOUR art work When hanging artwork for example, consider mounting together in a group on a display shelf as apposed to a solitary picture.

Personal photography Photographs can look great displayed in this fashion and massed together as if in an album out on display to be admired. Consider mounting photographic portraits in a collection of black and whites to help unite them together and make a cleverly curated, styled yet understated wall feature.

And a feature on a wall doesn't always have to be a painting or photograph....HOW ABOUT Hand drawn plates Decorative Plates from Anthropologie featuring my favourite 'Dog-A-Day Dessert Plates'Who else has given in to temptation when making the excited discovery of these beautifully decorative plates in Anthropologie...I'm sure I'm not the only one?! I bought the doggie against the vibrant splash of orange to go with a plate I hand painted myself many years ago at a 'paint your own' ceramic workshop!FEATURE WALLPAPERS And while on the subject of feature walls....we can't go any further without mentioning feature wallpaper and murals of course! Creating a stunning wall backdrop with the help of a designer wallpaper can be so effective in creating an interior with a wow factor.

Cushions and throws Concentrating on uplifting the soft furnishings can be one of the most striking ways to add a splash of detail and texture to a room. Whether you choose to upholster and upcycle an old chair in a designer velvet fabric or simply add a vibrant cushion and statement throw to the sofa can quickly and very effectively brighten up the interior and change the overall look and feel of the room. And where some people might disagree with me....when adding cushions, one is never enough! And don't cramp on size either. An abundance of luxurious cushions in various shapes, textures and complementing colours and patterns really helps to make a seating area feel immediately inviting and appealing.

Throws are also an ideal way to show off a textile, especially if the sofa or chair in which its placed is a contrasting colour or texture.

Flowers Even if it's just a small pose of flowers sitting quietly in a glass on a bed side table, even the humblest of collection of flowers can instantly freshen up a room. Some say group small flowers together and arrange in small containers and arrange on a low surface, where as tall flowers work best at eye level, but I'm a fan of flowers in any shape and form really.

Say it with books A key way to add personality to the home is to display your collection of books old and new. Everyone loves a good browse don't they! It can be so pleasing running through the titles on the spines of books in a book case, a real focus of interest - a book shelf can almost tell its own story behind the interests, hobbies and lifestyle of the inhabitant!

So for me, it's always about the details. The more personal touches you can add to a room, the more it will come to life, with each room telling a story. Blank walls are there to be decorated, open shelving a perfect opportunity to style those objects gathered on roads travelled, and furniture to be upcycled, revived and dressed. Do you agree?
