Living Room Renovation Project and the tips I've learnt along the way!

We've started our own little home interior design project in our flat in Edinburgh!

We moved into our new flat in October last year and it's been a brilliant renovation and styling project for us!

NEW HOME = NEW PROJECTS = A CHANCE TO RENOVATE AND REDECORATE!! Lovely. Bring it on.

so We've decided to start our renovation with our LIVING ROOM

Over the last few weeks we have been knocking down walls, opening up fireplaces and generally causing a lot of noise and dust.. It's been good fun.I thought I'd share a few images from our living room renovation project and makeover. Here's a picture of our living room at the start:       And this is what we've been up too!Removal of skirting boards, stripping back and removing the old wallpaper and knocking through to recover the old fireplace...  Re-plastering and generally covering everything with a convenient layer of dust!  Sanding the windows and making them water-tight..

Re-wallpapering..  and finally painting the wallpaper with an undercoat... Things I've learnt along the way:

  • Edinburgh Stoves has an amazing supply of log burning stoves...but oddly enough it's the coldest shop I've ever been in!! (However we did pick up a bargain fire surround in their upstairs sale so all is forgiven)

  • Glazing Putty is preferable to Polyfiller when it comes to windows and keeping out the rain!!

  • Place lining wallpaper in vertical lines if the plan is to paint over... or horizontal lines if placing decorative wallpaper over the top TOP TIP!!!

  • Skirting boards work wonders it seems for keeping out the drafts.....I want them back quick!

  • The best way of removing wallpaper it seems is to use a wallpaper scorer which creates tiny little holes all over before applying wallpaper remover and scrape away...WHO KNEW?!! That's my best wallpapering tip for the day.

  • Richard likes buying tools from B&Q...but it's ok because I've discovered he's an excellent plasterer.

  • I had definitely underestimated the amount of prep before the actual painting and decorating can begin
